Reunion will send a 15-person delegation to participate in the upcoming African Athletics Championships.
Hence it is for the first time ever, that Reunion Island will be able to send athletes to the African Athletics Championships. The Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) has given its green light to the Ligue Réunionnaise d’athlétisme (LRA), the island’s governing body for athletics, to send a group of athletes to Mauritius for the June rendez-vous, due 8-12.However special conditions will apply for such participation as determined by AAC.
On March 1, the CAA through its General Secretary Lamine Faty, has replied to the LRA’s query, granting Reunion Island a temporary ticket to feature at the 22nd edition of its flagship event. The LRA has already set up a list of some 10 athletes that could compete in Mauritius in June. LRA’s General Secretary Jean-Louis Prianon said he is excited to see athletes from Reunion Island compete at the CAA’s major event of the year.
At the next CAA meeting, a motion regarding Reunion Island will be debated. The managing committee will decide whether the French island can feature at the next editions of the African Championships in athletics.
